How Do Vaccines work?

Vaccine imitate germs. By doing this, your body is trained to recognize and fight against the real germs if and when you are exposed to them. When the vaccine enters your body, it triggers your immune system to respond and thus builds immunity against the disease in the process. Occasionally, you will require more than one dose of the vaccine over a period of time as more than one ‘training session’ is required for the immune system to learn how to effectively fight the disease. It is important to get vaccinated as per the recommended timings to ensure that you are protected.2

Is It Normal To Experience Side-effects From A Vaccine?

Similar to any medication, all vaccines can have side effects. Mild side effects, such as low-grade fever or pain and redness at the site of injection are expected. Severe side effects are rare in cases. It is still safer to get vaccinated than risk getting the infections or complications that result from preventable diseases.2

Based on the best global scientific evidences available, vaccines are assessed by the relevant authorities to ensure they meet the required standards of quality, safety and efficacy before they are approved for use. Vaccines used in Singapore are registered with the Health Sciences Authority (HSA). Safety of usage or safety concerns regarding these vaccines are still closely monitored even after being approved.

When To Call The Doctor
